The Reading Corner – What We’re Reading This Month!

Welcome to the reading corner! Once a month we’ll feature a current student, alumni, and faculty member who will share what they’re reading and why they recommend it! If you would like to be featured in upcoming posts please fill out this form.

Alyssa Palazzo, Fiction, ‘24

Book: Stories from the Tenants Downstairs by Sidik Fofana

“A set of 8 short stories set in Harlem. The characters struggle to make ends meet and build the lives they’ve dreamed of.”

Why I Recommend it: “The hopes and dreams of the characters leap from the page, and my heart breaks every time one of those wishes isn’t fulfilled.”

Reading Companion: Lucille, the cockapoo I’m dog sitting.

Oleve Berard, Fiction, ‘25

Book: Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid

“Lucy moves from the West Indies to the United States to be an au pair for a wealthy couple. It explores her independence, sexuality, and her relationship with her mother.”

Why I Recommend it: “Jamaica Kincaid deeply understands what it means to be a person that lives and breathes and every inch of unhappiness that comes with it.”

Reading Companion: A fun little beverage (usually hot tea)

Lori Lynn Turner, Associate Director

Book: Mystery Lights: Stories by Lena Valencia

“Unique. Shocking. Wild. Wait what?! Terrifyingly dazzling.”

Why I Recommend It: “Each story is complete like a book! And for this first line of the short story “Clean Hunters”: Emily was ten years old when she saw her first ghost.”

Reading Companion: Simply water — boring as that is!
